August 17, the Houston Dynamo earned the equalizer in the final minutes for the 1-1 draw versus New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium for a crowd of 10,963. The Revolution (4-11-10, 22 pts, -13 GD) remain 16th in the 18-team MLS and Houston (7-7-11, 32 pts, +1 GD) are ninth and poised for a playoff run.
"I thought we dominated them," said Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear. "Like I said, Matt Reis is the best player for them in my opinion."
The Revolution's Ryan Cochrane scored unassisted on his former Houston team in just the fourth minute, his first goal this season.
"I had a nice little celebration planned out that I kind of pussed out on," said Cochrane. "My plan was I was going to hop over the boards and sit on their bench next to Dom [Kinnear], but it didn’t work out. It’s probably for the best. I don’t think Dom would have been too pleased with that."
After the fourth minute, the Revolution tried to park the bus and defend their lead, but Brad Davis, Brian Ching and Adam Moffat continued to break up play and attack the goal. In the 90th minute, Bobby Boswell leveled the score, keeping Houston on track for the playoffs. Matt Reis was forced to make nine saves, several outstanding, but in the end pressure got the better of him. Just after the whistle, Reis started a pointless post-game scuffle with Adam Moffat and was red-carded. Moffat got his second yellow for the incident and both players will be suspended for their next games.
After the match, referee Michael Kennedy took the unusual action of responding in writing to a pool reporter's written question about the altercation.
"#16 Adam Moffat of Houston received a second caution for committing an act which, in the opinion of the referee, shows lack of respect for the game and was sent off for a second caution offense," said referee Kennedy by statement. "#1 Matt Reis was sent off for use of offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures."
Revolution coach Steve Nicol took umbrage with that decision.
"Nobody deserves to get a red card," said Nicol. "It’s a lot of huffing and puffing."
