The nod for Houston athletic performer of the week goes to Hyjji Thomas. Thomas is a 6’2” scoring machine from Booker T. Washington High School. He is a starter on the basketball team and only being a junior – he will be around another year to lead the Eagles offense as well.
Thomas’ Eagles play in the talent loaded District 22-4A and appears to be finally coming into their own. With Thomas leading the way the Eagles have won 3 of their last 4 games. During this stretch they earned impressive blowout victories over Houston Sterling 85 – 60 and Kashmere 86 -53.
Head Coach Vincent Grayson says Hyjji is one of the best players in area. Standing at 6’2” you do not expect much production in the rebounding department from a guard; but Thomas averages a little over 7 rebounds a game. His favorite athlete LeBron James would certainly be proud of that stat.
So what did Thomas do this past week that was so special?
The Eagles faced one of their biggest tests of the season when they squared off with Houston Wheatley. But like his idol - Thomas demonstrated that the moment would not pass him by. Coach Grayson summed up his performance by saying, “He’s a complete player. He showed he could do everything.”
Thomas’ “Lebron-like” stat line during the 105-104 overtime thriller – 41 points, 15 rebounds, 6 assists and a pair of steals. And yes we are still talking about Thomas not Mr. James. Those type of numbers will win the Eagles many games and Thomas many accolades. After high school he plans on attending college and not surprisingly they are already foaming at the mouth. Keep an eye out for this kid he is a very special player.
