The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center welcomes homeschool families to the nature preserve. The Arboretum has released the schedule for the 2009 homeschool classes. These events make a wonderful addition to science or nature courses.
Friday, September 18th
Feathers, Feathers Everywhere
1:30 - 3:00 p.m.
This class will focus on birds' feathers, how they aid in flight, help attract mates and are similar to human hair. The class is open to children ages 5 to 12 years old. Pre-registration by the Wednesday before the class is required.
$15 for members
$25 for non-members
Friday, October 16th
Mighty Migrators
1:30 - 3:00 p.m.
Students will study the reasons some birds migrate thousands of miles and how they endure the journey. This class is open to children ages 5 to 12 years old. Pre-registration by the Wednesday before the class is required.

Friday, November 20th
Bird Talk
1:30 - 3:00 p.m.
Children will explore how birds communicate through songs, calls and displays. This class is open to children ages 5 to 12 years old. Pre-registration by the Wednesday before the class is required.

Friday, December 11th
Family Life
1:30 - 3:00 p.m.
This event offers students the opportunity to examine the family life of birds. The class will study how birds build nests, lay eggs and raise their young. This class is open to children ages 5 to 12 years old. Pre-registration by the Wednesday before the class is required.

$25 for non-members
All classes will open with 30-45 minutes of classroom instruction, followed by a 45-55 minute nature walk and hands-on activity. Class sizes are limited. Registration is available on-line at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center website.
Parents are requested to read the Home School Program Policy Handbook before registering for classes.
The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center is located in Memorial Park, at 4501 Woodway Drive. The Nature Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Discovery Room is open every day except Mondays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free but donations are welcomed and support the nonprofit organization.
