Article by Joe Sioufi: Houston Jazz scene is getting bigger & better, since its inception, in association with August Jazz Month Houston, the Houston International Jazz Festival has placed Houston in the spotlight as the site of the nations only Jazz Festival focusing on international Jazz musicians.

Jazz Education Inc. has been the recipient of many honors including the American Can, Centering the Arts, the Barbara Jordan Award and a Certificate of Congressional Recognition in tribute to its many years of splendid service to the community.

The reason and mission of the Festival is to provide a unique cultural program that exposes Houstonians to musicians from outside the United States of America. The Jazz festival is not only to listen and drink to music it is deeper than that, you need to come to the event to experience it.

All proceeds from the Jazz festival will go toward funding Jazz Education Inc.'s educational programs. Jazz & Poetry Series and Summer Jazz Workshop. The Jazz and Poetry Series serves more than 20,000 elementary school children, and through two locations, the Summer Jazz Workshop trains over 100 teenage musicians yearly. This three day festival consists of a Kick Off Party (08/02/2013), the Jazz Festival (08/03/2013), and The Mayors Scholarship Jazz Brunch (08/04/2013) held at the prestigious Wortham Center where scholarships to student musicians will be awarded by Houston's Mayor Annise Parker. Jazz Education Inc. (JEI) was founded by Jazz artist Bubbha Thomas, who saw a need to fill a void where music education and youth were concerned. With a grant from The National Endowment for the Arts, he started an 8-week "Summer Program for Youthful Musicians" at St. James Episcopal Church.
