Reuters reports that Republicans lead the way to pass a bill that will cut the food stamp program by $40 billion over the next ten years. The vote tally was reportedly 217 in favor of the cuts and 200 against the cuts.
Democrats say that the new cuts will end food stand benefits for an estimated 4 million people in 2014.
Reports indicated that there are approximately 47.76 million people in the U.S. collecting food stamps. That means that one out of every seven people are receiving government benefits to help feed themselves and possibly their families.
