Republicans in the House of Representatives are holding a vote Wednesday on a bill that would stop President Obama from gutting welfare work requirements.
The problem? The claims of President Obama gutting the work requirements were creations of the Republican think-tanks during the 2012 Presidential Election and thoroughly debunked.
In 2012, President Obama agreed with Republican governors that states should control welfare requirements, not the federal government. Obama offered states waivers which returned control of the insurance programs to the states, easing federal oversight. This was a position held for years by governors of both parties, including Mitt Romney and George Bush.
The addition of language reversing something which never occurred is another instance of House Republicans living in what Bill Maher calls 'the bubble.' The matter is more vexing by Republicans fighting against returning a program to the states.
The bill will fund the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or TANF, program until December 31. A version making its way through the Senate does not include the work requirement language.
