When Los Angeles fashion models, designers and fans head out tonight to the debut event of LA Fashion Week featuring Fashion Star’s GLAUDI, they will no doubt be setting their DVRs to record the other big premier of the evening - Lifetime’s original movie House of Versace.
Actress Gina Gershon, 51, who stars in the film, revealed in an interview with Fashionista that she had just three weeks to lose 10 pounds in preparation for the role of Donatella Versace, sister of Gianni Versace, who took over the iconic fashion brand after his late 90s murder in Miami Beach. Gershon said her first reaction was, ‘I’m not going to do this,’ and it was Pam Skaist-Levy who convinced her to take the part.
The role of Donatella will not mark Gina Gershon’s first portrayal of a fashionista. She also guest starred on two fashion-forward television series, Ugly Betty and Just Shoot Me, and it is for her role in the 1995 film Showgirls that she is most widely recognized by fans. Gerson said while, ‘it’s been lifetimes ago,’ she is, ‘glad it affected people.’
When asked about the costume design for House of Versace, Gershon revealed that Gianni, who coincidentally had a hand in the Showgirls costuming back in ’95, would ‘turn in his grave if he saw these.’
Regarding her portrayal of Donatella, the native Los Angeles actress said, ‘I would love for her to like it.’ But according to a statement by the Italian fashion company, fans shouldn’t consider the film anything more than a ‘work of fiction.’
The Lifetime original film also features Hollywood sex symbol (former model and beauty queen) Raquel Welch as Donatella’s aunt, Lucia Versace.
House of Versace premiers tonight on Lifetime at 8p.m. followed by a one-hour documentary entitled Versace: Beyond the Headlines. Will you be watching?
