According to Traciy Curry-Reyes, writer for the Movies Based On True Stories Archives, the story was most likely based on an Ohio case involving Catherine Zang aka Katherine Zang. It was a sensational case that made national headlines in 2012, when her ex-husband Joe Zhang secretly recorded his wife's daily activities. Court records show, Joe Zhang, a building contractor, placed hidden cameras behind wall plug outlets to spy on his wife and her relatives, according to ABC News.
