The House delivered on John Boehner's promise to defund Obamacare, while at the same time passing a Continuing Resolution, to keep the country running until the end of December. The vote was 230-189, mostly within party lines. The bill will now be sent to the Senate.
The Senate is expected to strip out the Obamacare language and send the bill back to the House. The House will then in all liklihood, pass the measure as long as democrats do not try to amend the bill. In doing so, they will pass a bill before the Sept 30th deadline.
The fly in the ointment could be the two amendments attached by the House. One spells out how to prioritize spending, should treasury bump against the debt cieling, and of course, one to eliminate Obamacare funding. Harry Reid has not offered an opinion at the time of the writing of this article.
Other democrats have spoken up, including Nancy Pelosi, who once again made the false claim that the bill would cause the closure of the government, “It is a wolf in wolf’s clothing. “Either you don’t know what you’re doing or this is one of the most intentional acts of brutality you’ve cooked up.” Of course the House has passed a CR and the government will only shut down in the case of the democratic Senate voting it down.
Nita Lowery added, that by limiting federal funding now would prevent the government from providing aid to the Colorado flooding victims. That too is not true, because congress passed special appropriations for both Katrina and Sandy, and could do so for Colorado. Many people think that the democrats want to shut down the government and find some way to blame the republicans.
If republicans wanted to shut down the government, all they would have had to do was vote the CR down.
