House adjourns with no mention of tier 5 unemployment extension for 99ers

The House of Representatives yesterday evening passed a motion to adjourn the 111th Congress with no mention of H.R. 6556, the bill that would have provided unemployment benefits for the 99ers.  The bill was sponsored by Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA).

In an eloquent eulogy for tier 5, Michael Colliss laid into Lee, writing on the website  All247News, "This latest disappointment to the 99ers was little more then an effort by a relatively unknown Congresswoman to get publicity. The 99ers have suffered – and are continuing to suffer – enough. This was a totally unnecessary, and in the opinion of this writer, basically cruel and insensitive effort by a person who did not care who she hurt to gain headlines.  Considering the sad, unnecessary turmoil created by Congressman Barbara Lee of California, many unemployment advocates as well as 99ers are probably asking themselves, 'With ‘friends’ like these who needs enemies?'"

Michael Colliss worked for 21 years as a staff member in Congress.  He is now retired and works as a volunteer advocate for the 99ers.

The 112th Congress begins on Wednesday, January 5th, 2011.  It is unlikely to pass legislation providing unemployment benefits for the 99ers.  When asked about the future of the 99ers earlier this week, White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs said that the President intends to focus on job creation.

Colliss wrote of the 99ers, "There are at least 5 million hardworking Americans who have lost their job through no fault of their own during this the greatest economic crisis since the 1929 Great Depression and who have run out of benefits yet still been unable to find work. Every day millions of these “99ers” look for work in some job markets where new job openings may not even exist.  These good and decent people, many of who have worked all their lives, have had to endure the loss of a job, a loss that they did nothing to incur. They have had to see loss of homes, loss of possessions and many of them for the first time in their lives have had to apply for assistance in the form of food stamps, assistance from food banks, and other social service agencies. Many of them have experienced depression and despair at almost debilitating levels. Many of them – despite not having done anything to cause their present circumstances – are feeling a loss of self worth and a loss of dignity.  This is not a small group – it is a group that is growing by tens of thousands of people every single week. In the coming year it will become a crisis that will be even greater (if that is possible to imagine) than it is now in this week before Christmas, 2010."

The following is part of an e-mail received from 99er Joseph in Nevada, the state with the highest unemployment in the nation:

"Job search?  I wish there was a job that I could go in search of !  I live in the late great state of Nevada which is now just over 14% unemployment.  Good luck trying to find anything remotely resembling a J O B.  I am also one of those 99rs, or as Robert Gibbs recently described as "those guys" ( less than a footnote in his press conference! )  The thing that I don't understand is this......Why, when President Obama had the momentum, in his great compromise with the politicos on the right, didn't he add to the agenda of tax cuts for the wealthy/unemployment extension, an additional tier V for the sake of us 99R's?  ... And pleeeeze don't hand me the same old shtick about, if these forsaken few really wanted to find work, they could!  I invite any of you with this attitude to please come to my state and just look around.  What you will see is total devastation........The highest home foreclosure rate in the country, the highest unemployment rate in the country, and the look of despair, which is unavoidable to see, in many just ordinary people.

Disgusted and depressed in Sin City........But what the hell......Merry Christmas!!"

HOW CAN THIS PRESIDENT GET THESE LATEST LAWS DONE,WITH OUT HELPING MILLIONS OF 99ERS AND LEAVING THEM OUT IN THE COLD,BUT THEN SAYS IF HE REALLY PUTS MIND TO IT AND TRULY BELEVES IN IT,HE WONT STOP UNTIL HE GETS IT DONE, AND THENS GETS ON A PLANE TO GO ON VACATION.WELL SENCE HE DOES NOT BELIEVE IN THE 99ERS WE SHOULD NOT BELIEVE IN HIM AND VOTE HIM OUT.THE 99ERS NEED TO DO WHAT THE 911 PEOPLE DID GO TO THE OFFICES OF THE LEADERS YOU VOTED IN AND DONT LEAVE UNTILL THEY GET A BILL DONE.THERE ARE MILLIONS OF US AND WE NEED TO START PUTTING OUR NUMBERS TO USE AND STOP BEGGING AND HOPEING THESE HEARTLESS SENTORS AND REPERSENTIVES ARE GOING TO HELP US THERE IS POWER IN NUMBERS AND WE ARE GROWING.

WHY SHOULD OBAMA HELP YOU WHEN YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO HELP YOURSELVES OR EACH OTHER?
HOW can THESE 99ers LET not just the latest new, but the news that has been reported for over a month (that there was a small chance for the extension of UE and Tiers 1 to 4, and practically no chance for a Tier 5 for 99ers), HAPPEN TO THEMSELVES. WHY NO PROTEST? WHY NO MARCH ON THE STEPS OF CONGRESS? My support for the 99ers is almost GONE, as the most publicized "99er rally" was 10 people holding candles? With some of the highest UE and 99er rates in the USA coming from DC and the surrounding areas...and with millions of desperate 99ers out there...EVERY SINGLE 99ER SAT IN FRONT OF THE PC READING THESE STORIES and NOT DOING A SINGLE THING. Did you contact your local media? Did you contact the national media? WHY COULDN'T 1 TENTH, OF 1% OF THE 5 MILLION 99ERS CAMP OUT ON THE STEPS OF CONGRESS? (for you math wizards, 1/10 of 1% of all 99ers would be 5,000 people). I GUARENTEE THAT IS 5,000 99ERS "CAMPED-OUT" ON CONGRESS, THAT THERE WOULD BE SOME TYPE OF RELIEF FOR THE 99ERS. I am getting so tired of the sob stories from the 99ers, when they are doing NOTHING OF SIGNIFICANCE to HELP THEMSELVES. 10 people holding candles got on NATIONAL NEWS....imagine what 5,000 in DC would do. Woulda, COULDA, SHOULDA.

I can give you a quick answer. Not hard to figure out and easy to understand. I have no money. I cant afford to go to congress and sit on the steps, cant afford the gas. I don't have money for room and board out there and i cant afford food for the trip and the time spent out there. Being a 99er I am living off money friends and family gives me to look for jobs and going out and shoveling as many drives and sidewalks as i can when the snow comes. Yes I need help, but there is no way I can go sit on the steps of congress when i have to find work. Also, what is the point, the rpublicans cant seem to see anyone that makes less than $250k anyway, so I and anyone else is pretty much invisible to them and they wont change anything anyway. I just wish all the easily duped old people weren't so easily fooled into putting the scum that started this whole mess into power in congress.

I agree with all of these comments both pro and con!
I'm a current 99er in Michigan and have been since May.
I've been a cooperate level automotive manager for 20+ yrs. The auto industry in Michigan is long gone.
I feel bad for most 99ers as a whole. My family and I are very self sufficient. Most aren't!
We saw this whole thing coming for years and made sure we were covered as best as we could..
We paid off the house, cars, toys ect. ( managed to keep part of the school fundind for the kids)
We now heat with wood, hunt, fish and grow our own food.
Instead of driving a new truck and SUV as we always did, my wife and I drive trucks with 200,000 + miles on them.
Mine has 335k, knocks like hell when you start it but does great once she's warm.

To me it's really simple people!

    Shut down NAFTA!
    Shut down the borders!
Send all of the Illeagal immigrants home!

    Hello Jobs!

I was never a big Ross Pero fan, But one thing that he said made very good sense. And we are feeling the pain now.

He said, if we approve the NAFTA bill you will hear nothing more then a huge sucking sound!

And that sucking sound will be all of the jobs leaving this country!

    Amen Ross!

    Good luck people!

  • Sunny2 1 year ago

Politicians throw you what you think is a life line and then let you down. Of course the President is going to concentrate on jobs because that has been his focus with the tax cut signing. The Republicans sold him a bill of goods convincing him that it would create jobs. The time between creating jobs and now is critical. It won't work.

We need to organize ourselves by listing all of us under one group and have the same voice and be one block of voters. Obama is a traitor, he is the Fox news, Tea party and rich people. We should show him what we can do in the next election.

  • You wont show anyone anything 1 year ago

Aaron, WTF are you talking about? Willie is 100% right, you have the numbers, but not the will! You guys had a great chance to do something. Like the reply post posted right before mine. You 99ers had penty of opportunity to "organize" something that actually means something. If 99ers are living in their cars, call or drive to a news station for an interview. Once a story hit the air that a single mom and her 3 kids are living in a Geo, it would go national, and then the public could see the issue and it would gain support. But instead the 99ers would rather sit at home behind their PC looking for articles like this, and "pray" that something would be done for them. Now that the praying and hoping did not work, now the 99ers are furious and "this is unacceptable". NO, WHAT IS UNACCEPTABLE IS THAT YOU DID NOTHING WHEN YOU HAD THE CHANCE. And for those bashing Obama, shame on you. I support the GOP, so I do hope that you all vote GOP as it might put a hard cap on UE (if they dont remove the program entirely).

  • Paul R. 1 year ago

Aaron i feel your thoughts, because there's power in numbers. we the people are the voices of this said government and we the people can vote there asses out!

  • Willie 1 year ago

Aaron, You are right. We HAVE the NUMBERS, but not the organization to be heard with the strength of our numbers. Therefore, we are a weak group that can be ignorred without any repercussion. It will take leadership to present the cause of the 99ers. Unfortunaely, that has not yet emerged, or there would have been some significant acativity regarding the 99ers. In the scheme of things it has been merely a whisper. In several months the 99er tragedy will become more eveident, and congress will become painfully aware of the ramifications of their denial to act in order to remedy the crisis. Until then, the suffering and devistation of dire poverty will plague the swelling number of unemployed job seekers in desperate need of financial survival for their families.

What it feels like to me is that they are never going to add a tier for the 99ers because that would include us back in the unemployment percentage which would probably make it jump to almost 20% unemployed and ruin their false impression that we are no longer in a recession.

  • jim b 1 year ago

I just want to know what we can do about this. If you say that Obama deserted us, what do you think the Republicans have done? We just do not matter!!!!!!! The rich get richer (tax cuts) and the middle class gets @$#^ed.

  • 99isenough 1 year ago

No, they are never going to add a tier 5 because 99 weeks, almost TWO YEARS is ALL you're going to get.

  • Jim 1 year ago

Your're absolutely right about what you said. If you read the articles on the monthly numbers about unemployment, it always seems to be dropping monthly. That's total bs the government wants the people to believe. Only reason it's dropping is because people on teir 4 can't collect anymore and therefore not counted on unemployment anymore. This country and government is a total SHAM!

  • Deb Brown 1 year ago

Everyone says "99 weeks is ENOUGH" and I have to agree... "99 weeks has been way more than enough time for JOB CREATION!!!! But still, long after 99 weeks all we have is empty promises that they're going get around to it... they're going to start working on job creation and restoration... they're going to, but when? IN THE FUTURE? Clearly those in power in Washington cryptically acknowledge that they haven't done their job in 99 weeks but instead of taking responsibility for their own actions or inactions they are just trying to justify their failures by passing the buck and blaming the victims... Washington is SICK.

  • Jim...GREAT IDEA! 1 year ago

JIM, FINALLY A 99ER WITH SOME BALLS (if you can get it done). I wrote a comment above and on other articles for weeks about a "March/Camp-out on Congress"...I respect you as, with all of my posts, you are the FIRST AND ONLY 99er to comment on my suggestion (every other 99er only wants to post sob stories and not answer my question, b/c that means that they failed themselves and its hard to look in the mirror...and guess what...as you 99ers now know, posting sob stories on articles that are only read by fellow UE citizens...DOES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING). There is some "trenches" website that is helping the 99ers. I suggest the 99ers contact them to help organize this. Mean but truthful, those who know dont really care, but the real problem is that NOT MANY COMMON CITIZENS EVEN KNOW WHAT A 99ER IS (9 of every 10 people I talk to has no clue on this issue). Jim, I hope that you are "just talk", and that the 99ers get their sh@* straight and take some action. At a time when the US did not care about blacks, out came a man...what was his name...Dr.MLK Jr. HE DIDNT FEEL SORRY FOR HIMSELF AND OTHERS IN HIS SITUATION...HE WENT OUT AND TOOK ACTION! That's how you get it done, like a champ, not hoping and praying, but ACTING. PA, NY/NJ, DC...only 1/10 of 1% gets it done (with 5K ppl on the steps, Reps and Senators would have to address it to the national media, THEY WOULD HAVE TO).

Not every person can afford to go to Waashington to protest however as 99er and I am not lazy I have been out of work since September of 2008 and up until April 2009 I was taking care of my mom who was diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic cancer after that I reenrolled in school to complete my degree and will be moving towards a Masters program soon, I am unable to get even an entry level job, so now I find myself doing in home childcare and a work from home telemarketing job which is no where near what I made its offensive to be called lazy when over two years ago we were all gainfully employed and most for years with their repective companies. I think on January 5th every 99er across the country should gather and protest in their own states we have to pull together we need to make noise! We all have a story to tell!

jim b i would love to be with you on that so would the rest of the 99ers. but i can't put food on my table less known buy a ticket to washington and i know that others feel the same way. but, that is a great idea.

  • Doug C. 1 year ago

My name is Doug Cloud. I live in Grand Haven, MI. I was wrongfully terminated my job in November of 2008, after working eight years as a night auditor. I filed for unemployment and got it, then I began to look for work. That was over two years ago. My unemployment officially ran out last month. Thankfully I had some money saved, but that will only last until February. After that I will loose my home and be on the street.

The government is suppose to provide for the people, especially in time of great need. This was once a common practice among elected officials. Now it is simply a government for itself. They have shirked their duties. They have become inward in their thinking, caring only for themselves. As our Declaration states, "But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and provide new Guards for their future security."

I believe the time has come for all Americans to stand up and to "throw off" our current government. Such an act would require the mass cooperation of many Americans. Perhaps that is what the 99ers should start thinking about. Instead of rallies and candlelight vigils they should concentrate on how we can exercise our right - our duty - to provide new Guards for our livelihood.

I believe that Senators should only be able to spend their pay or at most 200 thousand dollars for elections. That would help stop career politicians. In Philadelphia we get people that even say they don't give a f*ck, thank you John Street, may you rot in Hell. As for the "99ers" it really blows... another great depression and the govt doesn't care, nor do the employed.
To fix the problem, and shut up peeps complaining on things they don't know about, maybe we shout fire everyone and have a national raffle for the jobs..... see what they say then.

  • JJ 1 year ago

It would be a shot in a million if a Tier 5 is passed. Have to accept it. Each week, more unemployed become 99ers. Congress knows this and doesn't want to or know how to deal with it. It's a sad reality of the outcome of the Recession, how the working class has suffered.

  • Dubsy Max 1 year ago

Its not just the recession, its also "progress". Less people doing the same work for less money ends in people out of work. Google Toyota, not just the car but the man's philosophy.

  • Aaron 1 year ago

I like to make the following points:

    1. Someone create 99ers.com website and encourage all 99ers to list their full names, phone # and email addresses to communicate each other.
    2. We should not talk about GOP, we know who they are and to whom they represent and they are very good delivering their promises, they do not betray to their voters like the Democrats. The DEM thinks the 99ers and all progressive voters do not have the choice but to vote Dem otherwise the GOP will come to power. This is the main reason they do not care about us when they make decisions, if we show our strength like the Tea Party does, they will start to listen to us and we will be in their mind at all time in every decision in Washington DC. Obama treated us like DEAD MEAT and he was trying to appease the independents and other moderate GOP since he can arose and mobilizes us like domestic animals any time at his wish. We should not be his domestic animals, we should be his bosses, we can fire him or we can extend his job at the white house. WE ARE NOT SHOSE!!!!!
    3. Once we setup 99ers.com website and have all of us listed our names in one database, then we can discuss issues it matters to us and the country at large according the priorities of the events via email and phone calls.
    4. Anyone who find a job in the future to contribute to the 99ers organization and have some capital to enable us to spread our agenda via Radio or TV ads in the future.

It's time to grow a pair, and stand up for what's right.
Writing, faxing and e mailing does no good. Most people don't even take notice, especially the politicians.I wrote a letter to the editor in my hometown newspaper. They called me to verify that it was me who wrote the letter. What the women said to me really shocked me,She said she had never heard of the 99ers.After she read my letter she did some research on it.She told me she didn't realize how bad thing really were,My God she works in the media and knew nothing about this?Something is very wrong with this.

During the Great Depression, unemployment hit 25%. It took WW II, and the Pax Americana that followed to get America back to work again. Yes, the G.I.Bill helped a great deal. Comparatively speaking, 10% unemployment is "no biggie," EXCEPT for the #99ers who are eating at soup kitchens, and trying to avoid being rousted by the police for sleeping in cardboard boxes. It's going to get worse. The Federal Reserve Open Market Committee meeting minutes disclosed they anticipate unemployment to stay stuck at the current 9.x % levels for YEARS to come, and that story disappeared from the news cycle in less than 48 hours!!!

The 99ers are a fragmented group without common leadership. They are a group unlike others Most groups have a cause that is a cure for misjustice that will remain as a permanent solution. Being a 99e is not the same as civil rights that become law. Too many common citizens view the 99ers as a temporatry situation, and wonder why they would organize to solve a situation that requires waiting a long period for congress to reinstate their benefits. To some it appears that fighting for the tier 5 takes priority over aggresive job hunting. I think congress wants to see what the current pressure will have on the 99ers. Will they try harder to find a job, now that tier 5 seems hopeless? Facing the worst economic emeregency in their lives will the 99ers rise above their circumstances and "dig in". Consider the fact that the majority of 99ers are skilled and educated, they do have the ability to understand and take action to recover. The waiting game is over for those who placed hope before reality. The current 99ers do not have enough time to organize, and wait for the outcome. If an organization evolves that can achieve a tier 5 it will be for the future 99er......and how many current 99ers are willing to join a cause that doesnt directly effect them now?

  • Dubsy Max 1 year ago

Part of the problem is that businesses refuse to hire the unemployed ie 75 percent of the businesses in the States have a policy of Unemployed Need Not Apply which is just another form of age discrimination.
1 Government needs to mandate that no business shall have a policy of Unemployed Need Not Apply or Must be Employed to Apply
2 Unemployment needs to be extended indefinitely until such time as
3 Business need to create jobs at a rate of 1.5 million a month
4 After 14 months of number 3 end long term extension
There may be people who complain about extending UI, BUT if all 99ers in my two county area apply for welfare and are accepted for all programs available then the additional cost would be between 950000 and 1950000 a month.
Make one question the logic of the elected clowns for NOT extending UI

It seems that our supposed leaders are content to take a break when others are still struggling. Negligence or avoidance will only add to the tension and escalation. Fault and blame are just more symptoms of the sickened system . A new solution needs to be developed, one founded on caring for all peoples quality of life.

'Twas the week before Christmas, and all through the house.
Very few members cared, that this bill was a louse.

Obama had hung his re-lection chances with McConnell and Boehner.
Not thinking this thing might leave him a loner.

The Senate had already been nestled all snug in their chamber with care.
Having already sent this stinker, to their counter parts with whom blame they can share.

With visions of tax cuts and a few crumbs for the poor.
A few members wanted changes, Pelosi “no more”.

On Hoyer, on Clyburn, Kucinich get in line.
Tonight we vote, to get this piece of crap out in time.

If we vote around midnight the weekend news cycle won't find.
What this bill really does, or how we really must be, out of our mind.

To the rich goes gold, and a low inheritance tax for their kin.
To the poor some unemployment, and higher taxes are both found within.

The vote is called, 277 yell yea, and 148 moan nay.
And with a slam of her gavel, Nancy calls it a day.

'Twas the week before Christmas, and because Obama lacked soul.
Its tax cuts for the rich, and let the 99ers eat coal.

Tazz....my dear lady....as much as I hate to admit it, you DO make a point tht makes sense. You will be the object of scorn for using the term " lazy" by the frustrated chronic unemployed who have truly done all in their power to get a job, but I suspect it is the ones who deep down know they could have tried harder or were too selective in finding a job that will call you names. I can tell you are a bright woman who wants to contribute to this forum. Tough love is not a popular approach....but someone has to wake up the group of 99ers who are on the verge of giving up. Without your input this forum would just be bashing the government, and stories of woe.

Its called insurance because you pay into it hoping you never have to use it, like home owners. I hope you never know what your talking about, I HATE getting a check from the state. I pray I will have a job soon and can once again take pride in what I do.

I am a 99er and have written countless letters to politicians and news stations. I am working 24/7 as a consultant, but need a full-time job. I was not on the steps in Washington for two reasons. One, the travel money. Two, I am trying to find a job and do not want to demonstrate publicly about my poverty. And to the person who refuses to hire anyone out of work for two years, why don't you explain that on the news so people will understand why we cannot get jobs. That attitude keeps us unemployed. Then we have nowhere to turn but unemployment benefits. In this very wealthy country, it is a sin that anyone should go without food. Shame on those who pass judgment and shut the door in the faces of those in need.
