The Philadelphia 76ers cheerleaders used to be called the Sixers Dancers
For about 15 years, the Philadelphia 76ers cheerleaders were called the Sixers Dancers. In 2011, the team changed the name of the cheerleaders to the Sixers Dream Team. In addition to the name change, the 76ers also increased the squads membership by eight members to around 20 total.
The name change to the Sixers Dream Team actually switches the cheerleaders name back to what it was in the early to mid 1990s. The 76ers also changed the name of their Dunk Squad team to the Sixers Flight Squad, and increased that squads membership from four members to nine.
Tryouts for the Sixers Dream Team cheerleaders are held annually in the summer
Tryouts for the Sixers Dream Team cheerleaders are held annually in late June into July. In addition to performing at all Philadelphia 76ers home NBA basketball games, the Sixers Dream Team cheerleaders also do many public appearances each year in the Philadelphia area.
The public appearances are at events like conventions, trade shows, banquets, parades, store openings, and corporate functions, as well as at charity and fundraising events. Some Philadelphia 76ers cheerleaders have even traveled overseas to perform, including in August of 2010, and June of 2011, when some Sixers cheerleaders traveled to China.
A number of Sixers Dream Team cheerleaders are students at nearby colleges
The 2012-13 Sixers Dream Team are a varied group of cheerleaders. A number of the cheerleaders are teachers, dance instructors, and students. The team members who are students attend, or recently graduated from, local colleges like St. Joe's, Temple, Drexel, Rider, and Immaculata.
The Sixers Dream Team also has a member who is an accountant, another member who is a pediatric echo sonographer, and a member who is an actress and a model.
