Indiana Pacers cheerleaders were originally called the Marathon Scoreboard Girls
The Indiana Pacers cheerleaders were originally called the Marathon Scoreboard Girls when the Pacers began playing in the ABA in 1967. By the early 1970s, the Pacers cheerleaders were called the Paul Harris Pacerettes.
By the time the Indiana Pacers joined the NBA in 1976, I believe the cheerleaders were already known as the Pacemates. The Pacers claim that the Pacemates were the first professional cheerleader dance team in the NBA.
The Pacemates were also the first cheerleaders invited to perform at the NBA all-star game. The Pacemates also claim to be the first NBA dance team cheerleaders to be invited to perform overseas to entertain American and NATO troops on the Armed Forces Entertainment Tour.

Tryouts to be a Indiana Pacers Pacemates cheerleader are held annually in July. To be a Pacemates cheerleader, women must be 18 years old, and high school graduates, or the equivalent. There is no maximum age limit.
There are also no height and weight requirements, but women trying out must be in good physical condition to make the squad. At the tryouts, candidates are judged by their appearance, fitness, dance skills, showmanship and personality.
In addition to performing at all NBA home basketball games for the Indiana Pacers at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis, each Pacemates cheerleader is also required to do at least 10 community appearances a year. The community appearances are at events like parades, grand openings, corporate functions, conventions and trade shows, as well as at charity events and fundraisers in the Indianapolis area.
Some Indiana Pacers Pacemates cheerleaders have even performed overseas. Some of the places that Pacemates cheerleaders have appeared overseas include Bosnia, England, Iceland, Kosovo, and Norway.
