Like most major cities, Wilmington has its fair share of lodging options. But only a few are truly distinctive based on their pedigree or proximity to premier regional attractions.
Our flagship hotel is, as it would be in any city lucky enough to have it, the historic “Hotel Dupont” on Rodney Square in the heart of Wilmington. The 20-story Italian Renaissance hotel structure was commissioned by DuPont Company president, Pierre S. du Pont, and opened in 1913. In 1918, “The Hotel” as it is referred to by Wilmington natives was expanded to include the legendary Gold Ballroom and DuBarry Room as well as the Dupont Theatre.
Of course the Hotel Dupont isn’t the only game in town when it comes to comfortable, convenient accommodations. The “Doubletree Wilmington – Legal District” is just a block from the Federal Courthouse and the Delaware Superior Courthouse. The Doubletree is also the closest full-service hotel to Wilmington’s Amtrak Station, the seventh busiest rail station in America, and the outlet shops and restaurants on the newly developed Christina Riverfront.
Wilmington also has some of the most beautiful country inns on the east coast. “The Inn at Montchanin Village” in the Montchanin National Historic District, for example, is a restored 19th-century hamlet near Winterthur. It was named for Alexandrine de Montchanin, grandmother of the founder of the DuPont Gunpowder Company, and is comprised of 11 restored buildings dating from 1799 to 1910. The Inn is also home to one of the region’s most popular restaurants, Krazy Kats. wonderful
The “Fairville Inn Bed & Breakfast” just over the state line in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places. This extraordinarily picturesque bed and breakfast is the focal point for the Fairville National Historic District, and just minutes from Longwood Gardens, Winterthur, Nemours, the Brandywine River Museum, Hagley Museum and several local wineries.
The “Christiana Hilton” is conveniently located just off of Interstate 95 at Exit 4B about five miles south of Wilmington. Like all Hilton hotels, the Christiana Hilton provides full-service, upscale accommodations at a reasonable price. But Christiana owes its “distinctive” classification to its close proximity to Delaware Park, a picturesque thoroughbred race course and gambling casino where the legendary Barbaro ran his very first race in 2005.
No matter where you stay in Wilmington, you’ll be near some of the country’s premier museums and public gardens!
