'Hotel Transylvania' No. 1 in movies on demand; 'Paranormal Activity 4' is No. 4

"Hotel Transylvania" debuted at No. 1 for movies on demand, from Jan. 28 to Feb. 3, 2013, according to Rentrak. In this animated horror comedy, Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) has invited some of his best friends (including Frankenstein and his wife, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, and the Werewolf family) to Hotel Transylvania celebrate the 118th birthday of his beloved daughter Mavis (voiced by Selena Gomez). For Dracula, catering to all of these legendary monsters is no problem, but everything could change for the overprotective dad when one ordinary guy stumbles on the hotel and takes a shine to Mavis. "Hotel Transylvania" got mixed reviews from critics but was a big hit with movie audiences in theaters.

The action film "Taken 2" held steady at No. 2. Liam Neeson is back as retired CIA operative Bryan Mills in this sequel to the action blockbuster "Taken." This time, he's out to rescue not one but two kidnapped members of his family: his ex-wife (played by Famke Janssen) and his daughter (played by Maggie Grace). Despite getting mostly negative reviews from critics, "Taken 2" was a big hit at the box office.

The police drama "End of Watch" dropped from No. 1 to No. 3. Los Angeles cop partners Brian Taylor (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (played by Michael Peña) patrol the streets of inner-city Los Angeles while Brian video records their experiences. They get caught up in gang war that puts their lives in danger. Although the movie got mostly positive reviews from critics, it underperformed at the box office.

"Paranormal Activity 4" debuted at No. 4. The "Paranormal Activity" horror movie series continues with the same "found footage" premise documenting evil lurking inside a house. This time, a family's teenage daughter (played by Kathryn Newton) takes center stage as the one who senses that something is wrong after the family temporarily cares for a strange neighbor boy (played by Brady Allen) when the boy's single mother goes missing. "Paranormal Activity 4" was hated by most critics, but the movie's box-office business was solid and profitable.

"Pitch Perfect" dropped from No. 5 to No. 3. A college student named Beca Mitchell (played by Anna Kendrick) reluctantly joins an all-female a cappella singing group named the Bellas, consisting of an eclectic mix of other students. As the Bellas prepare for an international competition, Beca suggests that the Bella try new ideas, but she gets resistance from the group's domineering leader, Aubrey Posen (played by Anna Camp). The movie got good reviews and was a modest box-office hit.
