The Fantasticks, A Chorus Line, Young Frankenstein, Hairspray, The Color Purple. Those are just a few of the shows whose names are scrawled across the walls of the Hotel Indigo Midtown’s colorful new lobby, which was unveiled earlier this month. Given the hotel’s proximity to the historic Fox Theatre, one of the South’s premier performing arts venues, it seems perfectly fitting that the Indigo would choose to decorate its madeover public space by re-creating some of the graffiti various cast and crew members have scribbled on the backstage walls of the Fox through the years, offering hotel guests a behind-the-scenes look at the city’s beloved landmark.
The Hotel Indigo’s lobby makeover also includes a collage showcasing ticket stubs from Fox shows featuring the likes of the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen, furniture in the shape of treble and bass clefs, and front desk pods fashioned to look like the Fox’s famed organ pipes. Mary Dogan, Hotel Indigo’s director of brand management, was quoted as saying that the hotel tells a story about the Fox Theatre “that many Atlantans don’t know about. If the locals were to have built this hotel, this story is what they would have told.”
It’s all in keeping with how the Hotel Indigo brand designs each of its properties around an aspect of the neighborhood in which each particular property is located. Atlanta’s newest Hotel Indigo, which is scheduled to open in College Park in January 2012, will be built under that same premise as well.

On a similar note, last night I had a chance to check out Fela!, playing at the nearby Atlanta Civic Center through October 16. It’s a Tony-winning musical based on the life of a Nigerian musician/activist that will literally have you up out of your seat dancing and singing and clapping along with the show. Check it out!
