Rugged coast of Costa Brava, Spain. Turquoise waters. 4 star hotel. Hotel Aigua Blava. Paradise. All the right stuff for a European getaway different from so many touristy, overcrowded vacations.

Hotel Aigua Blava sits on the magnificent and dramatic Fornells cove of the Costa Brava, a European (especially British) playground. There are plenty of places to stay along the jagged coast, but Hotel Aigua Blava has that something special. Maybe because its been under the operation of the same family for four generations. Maybe it’s because this splendid hotel sits on the blue-green Mediterranean. Whatever “it” is, this hotel stands out as the favorite of all my travels.

The breakfasts are to die for. Pastries, cheeses, and fruits of every kind spread across the white linen tables. Just thinking about the thin slices of jamon and flaky croissants make my mouth water. And the fresh squeezed orange juice…ahhh. European breakfasts at Aigua Blava feel more like an elegant brunch. And at every meal the restaurant is complete with white linens and white covered chairs all overlooking the panoramic view of the sea from the giant arched windows. It’s a place to dine, visit, and relax. Dinners are just as impressive as the breakfasts with traditional Mediterranean cuisine, complete with fresh fish, savory oils, cheeses, delicate desserts, and fine wines

Whitewashed walls and yellow awnings stand out along the sparkling waters of the coast. The service is high quality and personal and the remarkable staff caters to your every whim. Hotel Aigua Blava’s eighty-five rooms range from suites to singles. These rooms either overlook the garden area or the sea. It’s easy to chill the day away at the hotel, relax in the gardens, take a swim in the salt-water pool, play a game of tennis, or walk out to the Mediterranean.

Nearby, cool towns full of fun and culture dot the coast, and are within easy access to this charming hotel that lies in the town of Begur. Costa Brava’s wild coast is postcard beautiful, rugged and hilly. Note: if you’re driving a standard, make sure you’re well versed in stopping on a steep hill, turning on a steep hill, and so on.

Costa Brava is also known for its golf courses and is a tourist destination for avid golfers. One of at least nine beautiful courses is the PGA Golf de Catalunya . Hotel Aigua Blava will gladly reserve times or arrange for classes.

Hotel Aigua Blava is a place where the glitterati could escape. It’s white-glove ready, quiet, and tucked into a glittery, watery cove against ancient sunburnt cliffs, a sanctuary on the green sea.

From Dallas book a flight with American Airlines  or US Airways into Barcelona.
