Hot Wheels Track Builder 5-Lane Tower Starter Set and accessories review

Mattel's Hot Wheels Track Builder 5-Lane Tower Starter Set is the latest set in the series that allows children to design and customize their own racing experience. A transparent, futuristic Hot Wheels car is included, along with over 20 feet of track, track connectors, and a plane that blasts into the air via a car driving under a small tower. Five cars can be launched at once using this set alone.

The Quick Kick Loop can be added into the mix to provide stunt level feats, while the Daredevil Drop provides cars with a free-falling action. Another fun accessory is the Hoop Shot, which propels the Hot Wheels car into a basketball hoop, of sorts, and in the process shatters the backboard. Also adding speed, the Lift & Launch raises the car up and propels its speed. Finally, a battery-operated Digital Speedometer gauges exactly how fast the car is speeding down the Hot Wheels track.

Overall, the Track Builder 5-Lane Tower Starter Set and the provided accessories offered hours of enjoyment. Each box notes that the product is for children ages 4 years old and up, however, parents may want to assemble the product. In my experience, using two adults to put together all of the aforementioned items, it took slightly over an hour from beginning to completion.

Also, the Quick Kick Loop has a tight, rubber band mechanism, which after several uses is quite simple to push down and reset (it has to be reset after each time the car passes through it). But, initially, a parent should probably instruct and supervise a younger child on its use to ensure it is handled properly.

The Daredevil Drop worked as it should, as one push of the side lever sent the car down the ramp and onto the track. Also, something about the Hoop Shot was addictive and fun to repeat over and over again. In essence, the backboard simulates being shattered as it shoots into the air when the Hot Wheels car is propelled into the hoop. The Lift & Launch accessory sent the car flying as well, and with additional track, cars are able to drive under it. The plane that launches from a small tower, which came with the Track Builder 5-Lane Tower Starter Set, was fun the first time and can be adjusted to different angles and heights, but became slightly lackluster after repeating it over and over. Finally, I found the Digital Speedometer to be the most fascinating accessory. It requires three AAA batteries and gauges exactly how fast the Hot Wheels car is going as it passes through it.

Although I had not touched a Hot Wheels track or car since childhood, driving the car on the Hot Wheels Track Builder 5-Lane Tower Starter Set and taking advantage of the multiple accessories was pure fun. I do think that adding corner pieces of track so that cars can perpetually circle and race the track would make the experience even more enjoyable. The amount of different track and accessory configurations using these Hot Wheels products is no doubt boundless and limited only by the imagination.

The Hot Wheels Track Builder 5-Lane Tower Starter Set has a suggested retail price (SRP) of $24.99; the Digital Speedometer SRP is $14.99; and the Deluxe Quick Loop, the Hop Shot Stunts Set, the Deluxe Daredevil Drop Stunt Set, and the Lift & Launch accessory each, individually, have an SRP of $9.99. A Straight Track 4-Pack, which included an additional 3 feet of track and several more connectors, was also provided, and retails for $2.99.
