FilmDistrict has released the first trailer for “Olympus Has Fallen,” which is pretty clearly “Die Hard” meets “24” in the White House. As always, click the lower box on the left to watch right here, right now. Gerard Butler stars as a disgraced Secret Service agent who becomes the last hope to save the president when terrorists invade 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue itself. Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman, Aaron Eckhart, Melissa Leo and Robert Forster co-star.
Butler's character is named Mike Banning, not John McClane or Jack Bauer, in case you were wondering.
Freeman doesn’t play the president this trip to the White House. He’s the Speaker of the House who becomes acting president during the crisis. Presumably something’s happened to the vice president, or the writers haven’t glanced at the Constitution. Aaron Eckhart plays the kidnapped president.
Antoine Fuqua, director of “The Replacement Killers,” “Training Day,” “King Arthur” and “Shooter” helms from a script by Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt. Rothenberger’s bio on IMDb says he’s a graduate of the English Honors Program at the University of Pennsylvania. Benedikt’s says she was born in Reykjavik, Iceland.
“Olympus Has Fallen” opens on March 22nd. Roland Emmerich's "White House Down," with Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx and an identical premise, opens almost exactly three months later.
