Hot chocolate is an excellent antidote to frigid temperatures, but sometimes, a chattering body craves something stronger. A basic toddy is simply alcohol, water, and sugar. The booze is often whisky or rum, but you can use anything. January 11th is national hot toddy day, making it an appropriate excuse to make one at home or sip at your favorite bar.
Alex Ott, mixologist at the Refinery Rooftop bar at the Refinery Hotel in New York, offers his recipe, made with brandy and perfumed with chamomile tea.
Water Tower Toddy
1 oz Oscalis Rare Alembic Brandy
.5 oz lemon juice
lemon wedge or curls (for garnish)
cloves (for garnish
Combine brandy, lemon juice, and honey. Add chamomile tea, and stir well. Pour into mug or glass and garnish with lemon and cloves.
Though the Laurel Court Bar and Restaurant at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco just stopped serving its holiday vanilla hot toddy, the bartenders will still make it upon request. It's a warming combination of overholt with vanilla syrup, cinnamon, cloves and a squeeze of orange juice.
