Everyone who is anyone is streaking down to the Film Forum to catch Bill Cunnigham New York, a documentary by Richard Press.
Before the Sartorialist or any of the other streetstyle blogs appeared, Bill Cunningham's was photographing trends and movements in fashion for the New York Times. Since 1978 his visual diary of the fashionable has enlivened the pagesof the newspaper and quickened the hearts of the social set. Appearing in his column is akin to being knighted as fashion royalty. Empress of Vogue, Anna Wintour, is captured in the film saying "We all get dressed for Bill."
The notoriously monkish photographer has even won the chevalier dans l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres, which was given to him by the French Ministry of Culture in 2008.
The film is a look at the man behind the lens, tracing his career and his impact on fashion and society. Since opening at the Film Forum on March 14th, the documentary has played to sellout crowds, prompting the theater to extend it's run to the 29th of March.
Tout le monde (to borrow a phrase from that other chronicler, Tom Wolfe) has ventured out including Mickey Rourke, Reed Krakoff, Kim Hastreiter and Mickey Boardman of Paper Magazine. You may still be able to obtain tickets, if not here in New York then in LA which is the movie's next stop.
