As an editorial makeup artist, I am always interested in checking out the trends so that I can incorporate them into looks I am creating and also help to translate to them to the everyday woman. Four trends that stood out are matte and/or pale skin, defined eyebrows, red lips, and the natural face.
#1 Matte Skin - This is a look that I saw on several runways from designers such as The Row, J. Crew, and Rodarte. The key is getting the matte skin look right is to first make sure your skin is in good condition. Keeping your skin exfoliated and hydrated will keep the makeup from looking cakey and dry. After moisturizing, I like to apply a primer that is also hydrating. I love LORAC’s “I’m so sensitive” soothing face primer because it works all different skin types. There are many foundation choices available to achieve a matte look. If you prefer using liquid, Clinique’s Stay Matte Foundation is a great choice. It’s oil-free, comes in 20 shades and works for most skin types (except extremely dry). Julie Hewett’s Crème to Powder Matte is paraben free, contains healing geranium, and a good choice for dry to combination skin. For those who like a powder, Make Up For Ever’s Mat Duo is a great choice. It’s has buildable coverage, is mattifying, and great for normal to combination skin
#2 Red Lip – A hot look on many runways including Vera Wang, Alice & Olivia, and Marc by Marc Jacobs. The predominant trend was red matte. Cosmetic lines Poppy King (Lipstick Queen), Besame and Bite are known for their variety of reds. If you don’t know what red looks best on you, a neutral red (neither orange or blue) works. Bite’s Pastille Rosebud –Scarlett Red, Red Sinner by Lipstick Queen, and Besame Red are great choices. Make sure your lips are exfoliated if they are dry; follow with a lip conditioner. I like to fill in the lips with a matching lip liner first so that make the color last longer. Then I apply my color with a lip brush so that I have more control over the product.
#3 Defined Brows - Designer’s Naeem Kham, Douglas Hannant, and Threeasfour showed models with nicely defined, groomed brows. A great brow really makes you look polished. You don’t have to be born with perfect brows to get this look. Beauty brands Christi Harris, Anastasia, and Senna have solutions for any brow needs. Senna was one of the first brands to come out with brow powder and stencils; Christi Harris has a great brow shaping system called brow planning; Anastasia is a celebrity brow artist who has great products for home use. Whether it’s powder, pencil, tinted brow gel, or brow shaping, you won’t need to look further than these fabulous three!
#4 Natural Face - Narcisco Rodriguez, Herve Leger, and Ralph Lauren all had fresh natural faces accompanying their designs down the runway. I have some tricks on how to achieve this look at home! On well moisturized skin, apply a tinted moisturizer, like Pur Mineral’s 4 in 1 Tinted Moisturizer. It has a built in primer, is moisturizing and has an SPF20. Use Laura Mercier Secret Concealer under the eyes, it’s has light reflectors and doesn’t crease. Follow with Paula Dorf Doll Face Cheek Color cream on lips and cheeks. Finish the look with a black/brown mascara Maybelline great lash and don’t forget those brows!
