Hot Cocktails For Cold Nights

Even if Nashville didn’t get the blizzard that was hyped there’s no doubt that it’s cold as a well diggers …shovel, ‘round here and it wont be warming up any time soon.  So after a hard afternoon of making the world’s smallest snowman you’ll want to warm up and settle in.  What better way to do that than with a hot Cocktail?

Hot libations have been around for ages.  Think about it.  Young men have been spiking the hot cider at parties for as long as there’s been a punch bowl to serve it in and I’d say more than a few sailors were “fighting off the chill” just before they claimed to have seen the Flying Dutchman.  These drinks used to be commonplace during the winter months but for whatever reason, perhaps better heating, they have been largely forgotten.  Only the Toddy in its many incarnations is really made with regularity any more.   However, people are warming, pardon the pun, to theses drinks again.  Down at the bar we have added a winter Hot Cocktail list and people are really taking to them.

Here are a couple of concoctions to give a try around your house.  They’re great on cold nights when company stops in.  They’re the sort of hospitality your guests don’t expect and are happy to recieve.

Worlds Easiest Toddy
3oz    Wild Turkey American Honey
1oz    Fresh lemon juice
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
Hot Water
I named it thusly because it really doesn’t get much easier than this.  American Honey is already sweet and has a delicious honey and whiskey flavor.  You just need a little lemon to balance the sweetness and lend that citrus zip that pairs so well with both honey and whiskey.  The Angostura, available at any Krogers, gives it a little cinnamon and clove note.  Garnish with a lemon peel.  Easy but delicious.

Put all ingredients in coffee cup or other suitable hot cocktail glass.  Add a couple of ounces of hot water, stir, and taste.  You can add more water to taste but be careful not to make it too thin.

Hot Apple Toddy
2oz       Laird’s Applejack
3/4oz    fresh lemon juice
1/2oz    honey
½          teaspoon brown sugar
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
Hot Water
Put all ingredients in coffee cup or other suitable hot cocktail glass.  Add a couple of ounces of hot water, stir, and taste.  You can add more water to taste but be careful not to make it too thin.  Grate some fresh nutmeg over the top.  A cinnamon stick looks great as a garnish and will ad a bit of a kick as well.
