A hospital gunman is dead after police received calls of a man with a gun at the Portland Adventist Medical Center in Southeast Portland on Sunday. According to police, after they spotted the suspect, shots were fired and the man died at the scene. FOX 12 reports that it is still unclear as to who fired the shots first, but an investigation has been launched.
Officers were dispatched to the hospital around 9:30 p.m. (local time) Sunday following reports of a hospital gunman, city police spokesman Pete Simpson said in a statement.
“Shots were fired and the suspect is deceased,” the statement read. “Portland Police are now in the very early stages of an officer-involved shooting investigation.”
The hospital was placed on lockdown status but the order has since been lifted. No patients, staff members or officers were injured during the shooting that left the hospital gunman dead, police reported. All officers who participated in the shooting are expected to be put on administrative leave, which is the standard procedure.
