Horsemeat industry destroys all of us

To many humans the slaughter of horses is not an issue at all. The fact that there is a growing and increasingly open atmosphere concerning the consumption of horsemeat in Europe and now here in the United States makes such people shrug and that’s the extent of it. Meat is meat, animals aren’t people, so they claim. When we fail to respect and honor other creatures, and wantonly destroy them, we destroy a link of nature that is essentially part of ourselves.

Some may also read this and wonder what it has to do with holistic medicine. Simply put, the term holistic encompasses a lifestyle, not merely a medical alternative, that embraces all life forms as being of value. It includes animals and plants and humans as all members of the complex and beautiful family here on this earth and even the universe. Holism recognizes all creatures as having value and interconnectedness. In that light, we are all beings that depend on each other and share life even if some creatures do eat each other. In the balance of nature some beings do feed on other life forms as they were designed to do. Others work together in harmony and mutual love and protection. Such is the case with horses and humans through most of our shared history. (See http://www.horsehumane.org/ for information on treatment of horses.)

With this in mind, a great number of humans are horrified by the trend to acceptance of commercial horse slaughter whether for foreign palates or domestic. Horses are noble beings who have served their human companions in farm work, transportation, and even battle, for centuries. Today they are mostly used in recreation and sport, and are, when lucky enough to be owned (for lack of a better word) by someone understanding of their dignity, they are among the most beloved of animals. Certainly they deserve better than being cruelly killed for meat.

Please help end this atrocity. View the video (warning, not for the squeamish) and sign the petition (https://www.change.org/petitions/roswell-mayor-jurney-and-governor-of-new-mexico-susana-martinez-stop-horse-slaughter-in-the-state-of-new-mexico?utm_campaign=autopublish&utm_medium=facebook&utm_source=share_petition) to end such devastating murders of these intelligent animals. They are innocent and do not deserve the horrible fate that many are facing. In particular in New Mexico, this is becoming more and more acceptable but must end! How soon before we here in California also shrug it off as a way of providing more jobs?
