Media recently printed the story about a new horse movie that features a clever horse and his kind master. The real life story of Beautiful Jim Key takes place at the turn of the century and promises to become a new sensation.
The lead actor, Morgan Freeman, has already signed on for this film production.
The full-length movie has no shortage of production expertise and experience – talents are coming from Two Ton Films’ Clay Pecorin and Russell Geyser, from The Mark Gordon Co.’ Michele Wolkoff, from Revelations Entertainment’s Mark Gordon with Lori McCreary, and finally, from Cargo Entertainment’s Marina Grasic and Rogers Hartmann.
The director, Robert Rodat, is making his directorial debut with this film. It is also Rodat who wrote the script which is based on the book by Mim Eichler Rivas about the showman, Dr. William Key.
McCreary explains the emotions of this film:
Every once in a while a story comes along that is the perfect confluence of real events and profound truth. And every once in a while there is a character that is written so well, that it deserves Morgan Freeman’s presence. Beautiful Jim Key is both.
This beautiful story centers on the life of Dr. William Key who was a former slave, and on his many accomplishments including “Civil War veteran, patent medicine salesman, horse whisperer and self-taught veterinarian.” The film portrays Key and his smart, well-trained horse, Beautiful Jim Key. Together they exhibit a cause well before its time – the humane treatment of animals.
Key taught the horse many tricks. Fans of the horse claimed he was the world’s smartest horse and that he could read, write and do math for numbers up to 30. They even asserted that Beautiful Jim Key could “cite Bible passages where horse is mentioned.” Throughout the horse’s training and performances, Key used only patience and kindness and never resorted to using a whip.
He made Beautiful Jim Key into a national sensation. Together Key and horse toured the United States, traveling to their destinations in a special railroad car and showing in major cities. They were the stars of the 1904 St Louis Exposition.
Even US President William McKinley saw a performance of Beautiful Jim Key. McKinley made note of the gentle kindness displayed by Key. He reportedly said,
This is the most astonishing and entertaining exhibition I have ever witnessed.
