The horse killer stabbed the horse to death in a barn in Warsaw, Indiana. Sassy, an older horse belonging to Christina Meade had many stab wounds and died in her stall from the injuries. The horse killing occurred in the 3000 block of East County Road 450 South between 6 and 8 p.m. Friday.
The death of Sassy is particularly distressing for Meade because she rescues horses down on their luck. She began saving horses well over a year ago and providing a loving place for abandoned, starved or abused horses. The killing of Sassy was especially difficult for Meade since this was her first rescued horse.
Last year there was a hay shortage and a lot of horses were starving. And all the rescues were full. There’s not enough people that do this.
Meade was distressed and shocked by Sassy’s death, made worse by the fact that she is an advocate against horse slaughter. She wants the brutal horse killer to know that he/she is a coward.
She was the best horse and 27 years old. It’s bad enough if you are going to kill any animal, but she didn’t do anything to them. The way she was laying tells me she fought. She was probably trying to get out of the stall. I thought maybe she was sleeping so I just kept calling her name and then I realized she wasn't. I tried to pick her head up and that’s when I had blood all over my hands.
She believes the killer was afraid of the other horses because the back door was shut.
Meade buried Sassy on the property and will provide a headstone to mark the grave. Since the horse loved carrots better than anything, she will plant carrots as well.
Investigation into the horse stabbing is continuing by the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department. No further information has been released.
