Horse kick results in significant facial injuries to young woman (Photos)

Health officials confirm that while the 21-year-old woman had suffered considerable facial trauma, her injuries were not life threatening.

It happened in Harwood, Maryland. The young woman was working around a horse when it was spooked and let out a hefty kick, catching her in the face, and causing severe facial lacerations and injuries.

Chief Steve Thompson, battalion chief of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, said that paramedics responded to Old Birdsville Road, located in Harwood, around 9 a.m. to the emergency call. They found the woman critically injured.

Thompson said, “The injured woman sustained significant facial injuries after she was kicked in the face by one of the horses.” He continued, “Her injuries are critical, but not life threatening.”

“She was rushed to the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland, by paramedics. There she is receiving treatment. Her condition is stable,” added Thompson.

While this accident is not current February news, it occurred recently and it’s mentioned again since horse kicks can happen any time and to any of us. A horse is a large, formidable animal. It is a prey animal, spirited and prone to flee from danger. It often perceives danger from quick movements in its vision, sudden sounds, even shadows, paper blowing, water. The great majority of horses wouldn’t kick but they are prone to spooking or being startled.

It is always wise for a person moving around a horse to touch him, make his/her presence known, and speak to the animal. The horse should know precisely where you are as you move around in his space. A horse is soothed by a kind voice so speak to the animal.
