MERS Large Animal Rescue received the call at 6:40 a.m. on Feb. 7. Officials of Bridle Ridge Acres were requesting assistance with one of their horses that had been found drowned in a pond on the property.
Gitano had mistakenly wandered too far out onto the ice, meeting his untimely death as the ice gave way.
New to Bridle Ridge Acres, this 20 month old Gypsy Vanner Draft Horse was to be used in equine therapy for adolescent clients of COMTREA, a non-profit organization committed to the health of Jefferson County citizens.
MERS was able to recover Gitano from the pond and transport him to his final resting place. Bridle Ridge Acres intends to bury him at the end of a trail on the property, adorned by a memorial.
