If you’re anything like your Hattiesburg Horror Movie Examiner, you need Valentine’s Day like you need a hole in the head. But instead of cringing at the cheesy Hallmark cards and counting down the minutes until you can get Valentine’s candy on clearance, why not celebrate with a horror movie? Believe it or not, there are a few that fit right in with the occasion. Take a look.
Valentine (2001): In this underrated slasher, a young boy is rejected by several popular girls at a Valentine dance. Years later, the girls are being stalked by a mysterious killer who wears a Cupid mask and leaves them creepy calling cards. “Roses are red//violets are blue//they’ll need dental records to identify you...”
My Bloody Valentine (1981): This slasher begins in a mine in which a cave-in has trapped several workers. Harry Warden, the sole survivor, killed his co-workers so they wouldn’t take up his air; once he is rescued, he goes on yet another killing spree. Years later, he has warned the townspeople that if they ever celebrate Valentine’s Day again, he’ll return to destroy them. Guess what they do...and guess what happens?
My Bloody Valentine 3D (2009): In the remake of My Bloody Valentine, there is no Valentine dance; instead, the brutal murders simply begin again 10 years later. But it does have plenty of graphic special effects that still look pretty cool even in the 2D that the DVD has to offer. Oh, and Supernatural star Jensen Ackles isn’t bad looking.
Hattiesburg residents can pick up a copy of My Bloody Valentine at the Blockbuster Express at Ramey’s in Purvis.
Bride of Chucky (1998): 1998 signaled the return of Chucky, the killer doll from the Child’s Play movies of the late 80’s and early 90’s. This time around, Chucky attempts to win back his old flame Tiffany, and together they stalk a pair of newlyweds in the hopes of taking over their bodies. A good old fashioned love story. Kind of.
Let the Right One In (2008): An excellent foreign film that tells the sweet love story of Swedish tween Oskar and the girl next door, Eli. Oh, and it might be worth mentioning that Eli is a vampire who feasts on fresh blood. It was remade in 2010 here in the U.S. as Let Me In.

Warm Bodies (2013): Unfortunately, the release of the movie adaptation of Warm Bodies was recently pushed back to February of next year. But the love story between human Julie and zombie R should be a great uplifting romance just in time for next Valentine’s Day.
In the meantime, Hattiesburg residents can pick up a copy of Warm Bodies at Books a Million at Turtle Creek Crossing.
Twilight (2008): Just kidding. Sort of.
