It's a holiday weekend and the Fourth of July weekend has traditionally been the big opening weekend when huge action films open. This year, however, the movie that is probably going to be the biggest is a comedy starring Melissa McCarthy. There is, however, also a sci-fi family film opening this weekend and a horror film about demon possession.

These are the films opening July 4th weekend:

Tammy - Melissa McCarthy, Susan Sarandon, Mark Duplass. A movie that is produced by McCarthy's company and written and directed by McCarthy and her husband. McCarthy plays Tammy, a woman who is very down on her luck. She has totaled her car, lost her job and just found out her husband is having an affair. So, she sets off on a road trip and picks up her grandmother, Pearl, who wants to visit Niagra Falls. A road trip comedy that is getting rather negative reviews. However, that doesn't seem to have much affect on McCarthy's films. More than likely this one will do well over the holiday weekend. Rated R.

Earth to Echo - Jason Gray-Stanford, Astro, Teo Halm. A found-footage film that is a definite homage to the movie E.T. A group of kids who are all being forced to move away from their neighborhood decide to have one last big night out together. They end up discovering a tiny robot alien. What follows is an adventure as they try to help the alien get back home while avoiding the government agents who want to capture the alien to dissect him and study him. Not getting huge reviews, but many are saying that it a film small kids will enjoy. Rated PG.

Deliver Us from Evil - Eric Bana, Edgar Ramirez, Olivia Munn. A horror movie reportedly based on a true story. Bana plays a New York police officer who ends up embroiled in a mystery that has to do with demonic possession. A series of very strange crimes start occurring around New York and the police officer and his partner attempt to figure out why while the demonic possessions spread like a virus. The movie is not getting great reviews, however, and criticism is that the movie is not very scary nor very original.
