Cerebral Aquarius is welcomed this week with a few bits of trivia about the sky and the sea.
Why is the sky blue? What does SOS stand for?
I remember being told that the sky is blue due to the reflection of the oceans and waterways which make up about 86% of the planet. Farmers Almanac says, no, it’s the sunlight interacting with Earth’s atmosphere.
And, I recall being told that SOS was an acronym indicating a water vessel in distress – can’t remember what it was, now, but I don’t think it was one of these common misnomers from Farmers Almanac:
SOS
The letters signified by the signal ( . . . --- . . . ) prescribed by the International Radiotelegraphic Convention of 1908 for use by ships in distress.
SOS was chosen as the universal distress signal because this combination of three dots followed by three dashes followed by three dots (...---...), was easy to send and easily recognized, especially since they were usually sent as a nine-character signal, which stood out against the background of three-character Morse Code letters.
The letters themselves are meaningless. SOS does not stand for Save Our Souls, Save Our Ship, Stop Other Signals, or Sure Of Sinking.
Treats from the Zodiac this week
In addition to a five-planet viewing this month, the skies today and tomorrow will be punctuated by the giant of the galaxy, Jupiter, nuzzling up close with our Moon.
Earthsky says they won't cuddle up again in a conjunction (less than ten degrees away from one another) until the year 2026.
According to Earthsky:
By the way, unlike the stars, the moon and Jupiter don’t shine by their own light. They shine by reflecting the light of the sun.
Bottom line: Look for these two brilliant beauties – the moon and the planet Jupiter – close together for several nights around January 21, 2013.
As seen from the U.S. and Canada, this is the closest the waxing gibbous moon and the giant planet Jupiter will appear until the year 2026. Their close proximity on the sky’s dome will be visible throughout the world, but particularly dazzling for the Americas.
In time for the first of several inaugural celebrations, yesterday afternoon the Sun made its transition from Capricorn to Aquarius where it will stay for about a month (yes, I skipped over this in last week's horoscope...it's that Air sign malady, scattered; flitting about too quickly!)
It's Aquarius season! My time of year!
Most of us appreciate the qualities that are attributed to our Sun sign, whether we reference them to astrology or not.
For example, most Librans appreciate being considered diplomatic, while a Sag is not likely to feel the same! And, as an Aquarian, I love being unpredictable and original, but, I doubt very much a Cancerian would want these traits. And, a Bull doesn't mind being stubborn, but Pisces would find this quality unfamiliar.
Material, earthy Taurus is where you'll find the ruler of the body and the subconscious mind, the Moon today. until Monday, when it moves into friendly Gemini. On Wednesday night, the moody Moon will then move into even moodier Cancer until Saturday, when the Moon will go into prideful Leo.
The first Full Moon of 2013 is on Saturday, January 26th, at 11:40 p.m.
Communicative Mercury is still enjoying its tour through original Aquarius.
Venus and her values is in the last decanate of practical Capricorn.
Action-oriented Mars joins Mercury in friendly Aquarius.
Expansive Jupiter is still in curious Gemini.
Serious Saturn is in serious Scorpio.
The backfield remains the same and will for quite a while: the Awakener, Uranus, is in spontaneous Aries; the Dissolver, Neptune, is at home in sympathetic Pisces; the Transformer, Pluto, is in wise Capricorn.
Remember, if your birthday falls between the 18th and 24th of the month, consult a qualified astrologer for exact Sun sign designation.
Aries (Mar. 21 - Apr. 21): Avoid getting ahead of yourself by developing the quality of completion. Finish what's in front of you - focus on one thing at a time. In your efforts toward accomplishment, it's important to be thorough and complete.
Taurus (Apr. 22 - May 21): Worrying is using our imagination to create something we don't want. Worrying might make you think you're doing something, and, you are, but it's not productive and Taurus loves to be productive. Turn your attention to matters that you can affect and get busy.
Gemini (May 22 - June 21): You might feel like your own tornado with so many planets in Air signs this week. Brace yourself through meditation - focus on one thing for one minute; then, focus on one thing for two minutes - keep progressing. Be patient with yourself. Buddha said, "You above anyone deserve your love and affection."
Cancer (June 22 - July 21): "Guilt is the same mistake in another form," says the late Aquarian and teacher of A Course in Miracles, Hugh Prather. Let go of the hurt, forgive and allow yourself to be forgiven and go on. Wallowing is being host to a pity party. Life is long, let it go.
Leo (July 22 - Aug. 21): It's better to be loved rather than be right. Avoid pressing a point even though you might be right. Overlook another's need to do this. You rule the heart region, Leo; when you let your heart shine, the whole world around you glows.
Virgo (Aug. 22 - Sept. 21): Virgo, Jack LaLanne, used to command us to, "Get up and move!" You'll feel better, Virgo, and it will be good for you. It doesn't matter what you do; it only matters that you move. Physical outlets are good for the emotions, too.
Libra (Sept. 22 - Oct. 21): It's okay to take charge in order that peace may prevail. While it might feel sticky to take sides, peace is not about sides; it's about people remembering to cooperate and seek the highest ground. Cardinal signs, leaders, like you, Libra, are Zodiacally obligated to demand order to justice and peace.
Scorpio (Oct. 22 - Nov. 21): You're a powerful healer, Scorpio; for this reason, many nurses and those in the medical field are Scorpions, or the opposite, Taureans. For Scorpio, however, the gift is hurt or heal; heal or hurt. Be an instrument in healing and your life will be divine.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21): You get a bit full of yourself at times, arrogant, even, which is all well and good so long as nobody gets put down in the process. Self-respect is important; grandiose notions leads to a dull spirit.
Capricorn (Dec. 22 - Jan. 21): Enjoy beauty without purpose just once this week, to keep your values in check. Do a smiling meditation: sit for 5 minutes and just smile.
Aquarius (Jan. 22 - Feb. 21): Happy Aquarius Season! Your full, essential self is empowered and especially energized while the Sun tours your natal Sun - your Light is completely shining - let it glow! Have fun with yourself in your birthday season and enjoy being you!
Pisces (Feb. 22 - Mar. 20): "All Pisceans should learn to play an instrument," instructs the brilliant astrologer, Isabel Hickey; it soothes their energy. Escape a little everyday, Sweet Fish, in positive, constructive ways such as a hobby, music, sport, meditation, or anything absorbing, and the pull to escape in negative, destructive ways will be quieted. Life is harsh for you; check out a bit and restore.
Have a beautiful week. Our will is our life!
