The Warriors' D-League talent hunt wrapped up its second session of open tryouts on Saturday at Golden State's practice facility in Oakland where 65 players worked out for Santa Cruz head coach Casey Hill and his staff.
Everyone was a long shot, but Hill encouraged them saying:
We want to see you guys fill a role."
Among the notables in attendance were:
- Kiwi Gardner - a 5-7 guard and SF Pro-Am standout who was invited from the Santa Cruz tryout on Oct. 6
- Charles Boozer - Carlos' brother who saw five minutes of action with the Bulls summer league team this year
- Marcus Johnson - ex-USC Trojan forward who has played in professionally in Sweden and Croatia
- Arron Mollett - ex-NDNU guard and Santa Cruz's 2012 8th-round pick who was waived during roster cuts
Daniel Nwaelele earned a spot on the Santa Cruz roster after impressing the coaching staff at last year's tryout and Stefhon Hannah - the reigning NBA D-League Defensive Player of the Year - began his D-League career three seasons ago at an open tryout.
On that note Santa Cruz general manager Kirk Lacob told KSBW following the 2012 open session:
You never know. Everybody's got a dream, and there are a lot of really talented basketball players out there who haven't been given an opportunity for one reason or another."
Desired candidates will be invited to training camp next month.
