This year, The Conference Board reported that 55% of Americans are dissatisfied with their work which is the highest it has been in the 20 years of this comprehensive study. The collective of private and public sector leaders need to take a hard look at this and begin employing new tactics for improving morale which is ultimately the foundation of a healthy economy. I am particularly concerned for young people entering the workforce who are often full of promise and potential but quickly become disenchanted with the politics, inefficiencies and sadly, the bad attitudes and behavior they find in the workplace. It is not only big businesses that need to improve; it is smaller ones as well. Fortunately, some younger people are fighting back in their own creative ways…
Recently I met the most impressive women in New York City who are out to proving that it's possible to find career fulfillment in your 20's. Amanda Holt and Megan Bowers have created a site called shatterbox that features video vignettes of young professionals in a variety of industries with fascinating careers. It also offers a social networking platform to connect people with similar passions and a resource blog to stay inspired on a daily basis. They're launching a brand new scholarship to help launch young people into dream careers. The “Make Your Mark" competition gives $1,000 each month to an innovative young person trying to make their career dreams reality. No matter what industry you're in or want to explore, shatterbox wants you to love what you do.
Although their focus is on younger adults, I highly recommend this site for anyone who wants to be inspired by people going for their dreams.
