Looking for a place with a varied menu and friendly staff? Try Baumhower's, just off John Hawkins Parkway at Patton Creek.

My first visit here was for an early supper on a Friday night. I decided to try the “sand-wedge” they are famous for, the "Hot Bama" Brown . It is featured in the 100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama Before You Die. It was an excellent choice! It features their Almost Fried Turkey piled up on a slice of sourdough bread, smothered with cheese and mushroom-beef gravy, then topped with bacon and tomato slices. It comes with a side mashed potatoes with MORE gravy. You can never have too much gravy.

Next time I go I want to try either the Gulf Wild Shrimp & Grits or the Catfish Po’ Boy.

The very first Baumhower’s opened in Tuscaloosa in 1981. If you travel around Alabama, you may be able to visit one of their eight other locations.
