In view of the recent September 11th anniversary, patriotic feelings of pride for fallen heroes is at a high this week. In addition, the anniversary for when the last soldier left Seminary Ridge in 1863 is coming up on Sept. 16.
If you happen to be out and about town this evening, Sept. 14, you may want to check out the new Seminary Ridge Museum. At 8 p.m. tonight there is to be a special Candle Lighting and Program in honor of the Civil War soldiers at Seminary Ridge.
Researchers have been able to identify the names and regiments of over 430 soldiers who were patients here back when Seminary Ridge was being used as a Civil War hospital. In all there was a total of more than 600 soldiers who spent time here.
To honor these soldiers, over 400 luminary candles will be set to light this evening. Each of the soldiers will have a candle placed in his honor in the area where “sight and sounds of fierce intensity of battle raged around them and where voices of duty and devotion of soothing comfort of the steadfast caregivers was provided them.”
Following the illumination, there will be an outdoor program, weather permitting, to take place at the east entrance of the new Gettysburg Seminary Ridge Museum. Featured guest speaker, Dr. Carol Reardon, author of four books and co-author of Field Guide to Gettysburg, will lead the program which will be followed by an invitation for guests and visitors to walk along the path leading through the luminary candles. Dearest Home will accompany the event with live music.
