Honoring and remembering with hearts and legs
Last year, 600 attendees gathered on a hot August morning to be a part of the inaugural event for Houston Run for the Fallen. Even with Houston’s heat at its peak, many wanted to be nowhere else but with others to unite as a community who seek to honor those who have sacrificed their lives for our freedoms.
Held at The Woodlands-College Park High School, participants made their way around the track in whatever way they were able. Some ran or walked while others pushed strollers and wheelchairs or pulled wagons carrying little children for whatever distance they chose. One elderly grandmother proudly walked one lap with the aid of her walker.
Walking for their fallen hero, Cousin John
The morning began with a tribute to the fallen which included honoring their families and reading the name of each hero that was represented. A procession of Patriot Guard Riders on decorated motorcycles, static displays of military vehicles, clusters of groups wearing patriotic t-shirts, booths and music provided an atmosphere of awe and respect. As Congressman Kevin Brady fired off the shot to officially begin the Run, onlookers lined the field to cheer participants as they began their trek.
This year, the event staff is excited to announce the event will now be held annually in March. The event will take place on Saturday, March 20 at 9:00 am at The Woodlands-College Park High School track. The school is located on FM 242 just off of I-45 North.
This is a free event and everyone is encouraged to bring posters, signs and wear t-shirts honoring the fallen. The objective of Houston Run for the Fallen is to first and foremost honor fallen soldiers and their families and then to honor active and veteran service members and the organizations that support them. All proceeds and donations will go directly to Freedom is not Free, a non-profit organization working to help wounded Veterans and families of the fallen.
