For millions of Americans mayonnaise is a condiment reserved for salads and sandwiches, but for Mama June, it’s the stuff to make your skin crawl. According to a The Clicker report dated Jan. 3, Mama June is filled with anxiety at the sight of mayonnaise.
In an attempt to cure their mom from this irrational fear, Honey Boo Boo and her sisters decided to desensitize Mama June by presenting her with a huge bowl of smooth, white mayo. Her response, of course, was not what the girls expected.
"My anxiety level is up like beyond out the roof. I mean, like my chest is real tight. My throat feels like it's gonna close up," warned Mama June as the bowl was pushed closer to her by well-meaning Honey Boo Boo and her sisters.
Although there appears to be no specific name for this unusual phobia, Mama June is not the only person who suffers from a fear of mayonnaise. A quick Internet search reveals a list of at least nine people who suffer from a fear of mayonnaise on Unusual Phobias. Several blogs reference this unusual phobia.
Phobias are defined as an intense irrational fear of an object or situation, says the Mayo Clinic. But that doesn’t stop people from suffering from phobias. According to Statistic Brain, 6.3 million Americans are diagnosed with a phobia. No information is given about the number of people with undiagnosed phobias.
Cibophobia, the fear of food, may be the closest official name for Mama June's fear of mayonnaise, but even then, it doesn’t quite describe her intense fear of gooey mayo.
We all instinctively understand common phobias such as glossophobia, the fear of speaking in public, necrophobia, the fear of death, and arachnophobia, the fear of spiders, but many of us secretly laugh at those with less common fears like Mama June's fear of mayonnaise.
According to Mama June, her fear developed as a result of being fed mayo sandwiches for breakfast, lunch and dinner when she was a child. For others, the origin of their phobias is not as clear cut.
For now, it seems, Mama June, like the rest of us mere mortals, will have to deal with her fear of mayonnaise by avoiding situations where she is exposed to globs of the offending substance.
