Honey Boo Boo's father, Michael Thompson aka "Sugar Bear", was rushed to the hospital Monday morning because he was having chest pains according to the official Alana Thompson Facebook page on Thursday morning.
Apparently the Shannon/Thompson family had a big health scare concerning the patriarch of the family when he was admitted into the ICU. After undergoing a batter of tests, it was revealed that Sugar Bear was suffering from pancreatitis.
According to Web MD, pancreatitis is a disease where the pancreas becomes inflamed. In most cases, pancreatitis is caused by indulging in heavy alcohol use or gallstones, however, the Honey Boo Boo family insists that the disease was brought on by his type 2 diabetes. Metabolic disorders are also a risk factor.
Early Thursday morning, June "Mama" Shannon wrote on their Facebook page that Sugar Bear had been taken out of ICU and updated his status:
"[H]e is out of ICU but he has a long road ahead of him we have let his pancreas rest and his body rest tests r being ran everyday cause they dont know what is causing us cause normally causes it like gall stones alcoholism or high cholesterol and he doesn't have none of these things so hope we get answers soon we r staying very close to the hospital in case he needs us thanks for all the thoughts ahead of time and i will update when i can... (June)."
Fans responded with offers of prayer and well wishes, while some detractors suggested a diet change for the whole family.
In some cases pancreatitis can cause cause death or damage to major organs. Treatment typically consists of intravenous fluids or in severe cases, laparoscopic surgery.
"Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" is scheduled to return to TLC for its second season sometime in May 2013.
