Honey Boo Boo goes global

TLC’s popular reality series “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” has done more than capture the attention of an American audience. It seems that Alana Thompson, Little Honey Boo Boo’s real name, is already a big hit in Europe and will soon be available in Italy, Australia, Latin America and the Netherlands, reports the New York Post on February 25.

Although the series does pose some difficulties in translation due to the family’s unique use of language, it is expected to be a bit hit as other countries are eager to see a slice of American life that may be drastically different from their own.

“This is a slice of Americana — not typical America, but of a particular family in the South, and the international audience knows that there are many facets to American lives,” Luis Silberwasser, executive VP and chief content officer for Discovery Networks International, told the New York Post.

He further explained that the network was putting together a glossary to explain common words that take on a new meaning in when used by Honey Boo Boo, Mama June, Sugar Bear, Uncle Poodle and the rest of Honey Boo Boo's family. Exactly how the glossary would become available to the viewing audience is not known at this time.

“Here Comes Honey Boo Boo has become a pop culture phenomenon,” said Amy Winter, general manager of TLC.
