Honda announced today that it is recalling nearly 46,000 model year 2008 and 2009 Odyssey vehicles due to a potential defect with the vehicle's rear liftgate system. The recall affects 2008 model year vehicles manufactured between October 2, 2007 and August 21, 2008 as well as 2009 model year vehicles manufactured between August 7, 2008 and January 13, 2009. All vehicles involved in the recall were built at Honda’s Lincoln, Alabama assembly plant.
According to information contained within National Highway and Traffic Administration (NHTSA) campaign ID number 12V062000, the recall is the result of a potentially defective gas-filled strut used to help raise and support the rear liftgate. Due to a supplier-related manufacturing defect, affected liftgate struts may be prone to early life failure, resulting in reduced strut performance. In extreme cases, the liftgate could close under its own weight suddenly and unexpectedly, resulting in personal injury.
To correct the problem, authorized Honda dealers will replace both gas-filled struts on affected vehicles. Honda is expected to begin notifying customers on or about March 13, 2012.
