Honda Odyssey minivan concept
CHICAGO, Feb .12 -- Honda calls it a concept vehicle, but it’s a safe bet that the Odyssey introduced at the Chicago Auto Show is a near dead-ringer for its fourth generation minivan that will go on sale later this year.
The new vehicle is an inch lower and 1.4 inches wider than the present model, giving it a somewhat different profile and stance from the current model. Honda says the new shape will also improve aerodynamics and help to increase fuel mileage.
Although it did not release any specifics about the new vehicle’s powertrain, Honda anticipates that it will achieve EPA ratings of 19 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway.
The present-generation Odyssey is powered by a 3.5-liter, 244-horsepower V-6 engine. Engines on upscale models feature variable cylinder management, which allows them to run on six, four or three cylinders depending on the power required. They have an EPA rating of 17 mpg city/25 highway. Power for all Odysseys is transmitted to the front wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission.
According to the Japanese manufacturer, the upcoming Odyssey’s interior will have some design changes that will increase the space available for people and cargo. Overall, the vehicle should have a slightly sportier look than the present model.
Current Odyssey minivans hold seven or eight passengers.
