Street racing on public roads is illegal for many reasons. The most obvious of all reasons is the threat to innocent bystanders, including street racers and the average chicken trying to cross the road. The following video footage shows a Honda Civic trying to turn around on a road that was being used for street racing by two other Honda's. The crash test review for a Honda Civic is very impressive and all occupants survived the following wreck thanks to Honda's special design.
Street racing on public roads is illegal because it is not controlled and therefore deemed dangerous. There is no "zone" that is setup with walls, barriers, and proper safety personnel to separate the racers from the audience. The audience can literally walk onto the track at anytime! Cars can blow tires or gears and fly into innocent bystanders. This happens enough to be caught on video. Take a look at various clips of street racing accidents on YouTube or Streetfire.net as examples of street racing gone bad.
There is a lot of groups like EvoStreetRacers.com that are trying to convert these type of racers into track racers. The solution to curing illegal street racing is to have more free track day events such as autocross in parking lots, airports, etc. Take a look around your town and see where a temporary track can be setup. Tampa is leading the way with over 70 performance shops and track events every 2-3 days where racers can flex their vehicles performance. Street racing is not as bad since more effort has been put towards sanctioned racing events! Try it and see!

Geez... RT'd on cafecars (supercool video eek).
Great Article! As a member of Evo Street Racers since 2004 the changes that we have made in my town have been great; but, as you can see there is still many people dying and getting hurt which is all the more reason why we need to help eachother out by stopping in and beyond out towns! We need to get these people off the street and onto the track, which appears simple enough, but every area has it problems... lack of tracks, tracks that dont accomodate for the street racers, etc. Don't give up though! We'll do it!
Amazing article!
