Honda announces Odyssey and Element recall over brake problems

Tuesday, Honda announced a recall of over 410,000 Odyssey minivans and Element small trucks. The recall is due to a braking problem that makes it difficult to brake and stop the vehicle if it is not repaired.
Approximately 344,000 Honda Odysseys and 68,000 Honda Elements are being recalled and it includes the 2007 and 2008 models.

Honda released a statement Tuesday that said the brake pedals may feel "soft" when pressed and must be pressed harder to stop the vehicle. If left unrepaired, the problem may eventually result in a possible crash, according to Chris Martin, Honda spokesman.

"It's definitely not operating the way it should, and it's safety systems, so it brings it to the recall status," Martin said.

Three crashes have been reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) because of the braking problem. No injuries or deaths have occurred.

Honda said in the statement: "Although not all vehicles being recalled are affected by this issue, we are recalling all possible units to assure all customers that their vehicles will perform correctly."

Letters will be sent to owners of the recalled Honda vehicles by the end of April. Honda said that if drivers are concerned they can take their car to a Honda dealer now.

By April 19, Honda owners can check the Honda website to see if their vehicle is on the recall list www.recalls.honda.com Honda can also be reached by phone at (800) 999-1009 (select option four).

Toyota also recently issued a massive recall for braking problems, but that recall is an unrelated acceleration problem that deals with the gas and brake pedals.

The problems with Toyota and the recalls over the past few months creates an opportunity for other dealerships. "Every dog has his day," said Jerry Seiner who owns several General Motors dealerships in Salt Lake City. "Maybe they'll take a second look at us instead of Toyota...when Toyota stumbles it's our opportunity."
