With the cost of everything going up, people are on the lookout for better ways to live and keep costs down. “Homesteading” has meant many things over the years but today’s homesteaders are people trying to live off of whatever land they have to the best of their abilities. Most often this means raising some or all of their own food but it can mean much more than that.
Choosing Your Land
The most important aspect of homesteading is choosing the piece of land where you will either live or raise your crops or livestock. There a several important factors to consider when choosing a piece of land.
- Can you afford land in the area of your choice
- Is the land fertile or suited to your purposes
- Can you find a job near the land so you can support yourself
- Are there any restrictions on land use
- How much land will you need to properly support your homestead
- Do you need just land or a parcel with a house, pond, outbuildings
We’ll talk more about these issues in upcoming articles but for now, you have plenty to consider. As you start imagining your own homestead, keep detailed notes on what is important to you. It will make choosing the right piece of land easier.
