Mayim Bialik is just one of many homeschooling celebrities. You may remember her from 90s TV show Blossom. Or perhaps you have seen her starring in the TV series The Big Bang Theory as Sheldon’s girlfriend Amy Farrah Fowler. Unlike many celebrities that send their children to private school or have tutors come to the home, Mayim Bialik chooses to homeschool her children.
Homeschool the Bialik way
Mayim Bialik holds a doctorate in neuroscience from UCLA. She teaches higher level science classes for Jewish homeschoolers in Los Angeles. When she is not teaching or working, Mayim is with her children. She believes in an unschooling philosophy. Although her children are very young, she feels that each day holds potential to teach her children about the world, society, and people.
Some of Bialik’s way of raising children might raise some eyebrows. She is an advocate of co-sleeping, unschooling, and extended breastfeeding. Co-sleeping is where parents and children share a bed. For parents with infants and toddlers, co-sleeping is a great way to actually get some sleep. Extended breastfeeding is not for everyone, but it is common in many cultures—just not in the United States. Women who extend breastfeeding nurse their children until they are toddlers—and beyond. Some experts say that this is beneficial to both mother and child.
Example for homeschool moms
Mayim Bialik shows that you can balance work with homeschool. Deciding to homeschool your children usually means that one parent stays at home. Many homeschool families are single income families.
Mayim shows that you can have a career and homeschool at the same time. Many homeschool moms work outside the home. Others work from home either through a home-based business or by telecommuting. One of the biggest obstacles I hear from moms who would like to homeschool is that they cannot give up a second income. It is possible to work and to homeschool your children—it just takes careful planning.
Mayim Bialik is not the only celebrity that homeschools. Check back soon as I will be highlighting other Hollywood homeschoolers.
