Homeschooling 101: Saving money - educator's discounts

Photo/Laura Letizia

Let's face it, homeschooling can be expensive. Not only are homeschoolers all paying  taxes to run the public school system, but  they also purchase their own curriculum, materials, science and art supplies, and quite often tutoring services. They pay for extracurricular activities too!

Fortunately, many businesses that offer discounts to teachers extend that courtesy to homeschoolers!! Typically, all you need is your Letter of Intent  from your school district. Keep in mind that sometimes the person at the cash register won't be aware of this, so plan to ask to speak to the manager. Tell them first that you need the educator's discount and then explain you are homeschooling.

  • Academic Superstore - You will need to send them some paperwork first, but you can get 30-50% off many items in the store.
  • Apple Homeschool Store - Get discounts on things like computers and even iPods!
  • Blockbuster Video  - offers free rentals for educational use. Speak to the manager and ask for the educational discount.

  • Border's Books (Waldenbooks) - offers a 20% discount on all products to educators. Store locations in the Columbus include: 4545 Kenny Road, 5043 Tuttle Crossing Blvd., 6670 Sawmmill Rd., and 1500 Polaris Parkway
  • FedEx Kinko's Educator Savings Program -  offers 15% discount on most products and services at participating FedEx Kinko’s nationwide. Ask the manager at your local Kinko's
  • Great Scopes - home-based business that offers discounted miscroscopes to homeschooling families!
  • Jo-Ann's Fabric and Crafts - offers a 10% discount on all products to educators.
  • Half Price Books - 10% discount card
  • Holcomb's - They offer a teacher's rewards card and teacher-only specials. Locations in Columbus include: Cherry Park Square in Westerville, Crossroads East, and Northwest Square on Sawmill Road.
  • Hollywood Video - offers free rentals for movies used for education.
  • Office Depot Star Teacher Program - apply in-store for a card which gives you 10% off of supplies for your school.
  • Tutor.com - Use promo code "homeschoolmom" to get 50 free minutes of online tutoring. You will also receive 10% off any purchases made within 3 months of signing up.

This list is by no means all-inclusive. Don't be afraid to ask the manager at other extablishments if you can be offered an educator's discount.  You never know what you will find to make your homeschooling life easier!!

Thanks for this. Educational supplies get expensive and it helps to know where to get discounts.
