Over the weekend, Long Beach held its Third Solar Grand Prix. This year, homeschoolers got together through the learning center, Great Educational Experiences (gee!), and won two first place trophies and one second place. Eighteen schools in the Long Beach competed in four categories. Team Fun in the Sun placed first in Sustainable Design, first in Overall Design, and second place in Innovative Design. Team Fun in the Sun, consists of Grace Satterthwaite, Johari Gardner, Corbin Moore, and Lillia Moore. The team came together back in December to enter their project and met in January when they received their solar car kit to build. The Grand Prix is only open to middle and high school students in Long Beach and sponsored by Gerrie Schipske , the Fifth District Councilwoman for Long Beach. One of the moms, Debra Satterthwaite, states that the team learned many important lessons, such as teamwork, and listening to one another, and working it out. She states it was a great overall experience and that the team is already talking about what they want to do next year to make their car faster.
