In keeping with yesterday's topic of homeschooling on a single income, a great way for home school mom's to make a little extra money while giving their kids a chance to volunteer in the community is through your local MOPS group. Here is an excerpt from their web-site:
MOPS stands for Mothers of Preschoolers. MOPS International exists to meet the needs of every mom - urban, suburban and rural moms, stay-at-home and working moms, teen, single and married moms - moms with different lifestyles who all share a similar desire to be the very best moms they can be! MOPS recognizes that the years from infancy through kindergarten are foundational in a mother-child relationship and are filled with unique needs.
In the Raleigh area alone there are nine groups! Each group meets twice a month and is always in need of childcare providers. As a homeschooling mom, you could contact one of the groups and become a child care provider for children from birth to five years of age or for their home school kids and track-out groups. Each meeting time is around three and a half hours. Your older children can work as assistants in either the classrooms or to the childcare coordinator as a runner.
Some people may ask "Why, when I am already home with my children, would I want to go out and take care of other people's children?" The answer is simple: This is a great opportunity to not only earn a small income but to also teach your children the importance of volunteering in their community. MOPS is really an outreach ministry that reaches un-churched mothers and those who may not have a good support group of friends. What greater witness to homeschooling could you be than by volunteering your time to such a cause?
Some of the local churches in our area offering a MOPS group include: North Wake Church in Wake Forest, Open Door Baptist Church in Raleigh, Wake Crossroads Baptist Church in Raleigh, True Life Church in Raleigh, Crossroads Fellowship in Raleigh, Green Pine Baptist Church in Knightdale, Macedonia Baptist Church in Raleigh, First Assembly of God in Raleigh, and Crosspointe Church in Cary.
Homeschooling on a single income is a struggle. Finding a job that works well with your family's needs while homeschooling is no easy task. By looking at opportunities such as what MOPS has to offer can take a little of the financial burden off of you and your spouse plus you get to be a blessing to your community.
