Homeschool Spelling Bee to be held March 19th

The Valleyview Homeschool Support Group, a ministry of Valleyview Chapel of Wadsworth, is sponsoring a spelling bee for homeschooled students. This traditional academic competition will provide students in grades 1-8 a chance to compete for medals and trophies. The Bee, slated for Friday, March 19th,  will begin at 9:30AM at Valleyview Chapel. Jane Wiita, support group leader and organizer of the event says the spelling bee promises to be a positive and enriching educational experience for the kids.

"Every student will have a taste of success at this spelling bee because they will be given a word list to study from. Once the words from the list are used up in competition, words of similar degree of difficulty will be used. Every participant will leave with a medal on a ribbon and trophies will be awarded to the winners in each grade", stated Wiita.

Critics of homeschooling often point out the lack of opportunity homeschooled students have to compete against their peers. Resourceful homeschool parents like Wiita work hard to create a supportive, yet challenging environment for their children.

"I think kids learn and grow when they are pushed out of their comfort zone into a safe environment that challenges them. For most children, this happens in the school environment; for homeschoolers, we have to create it ourselves. I like to provide my children with as many of these situations as possible, because I like the results that I see. Organizing a Spelling Bee is another way to accomplish this", said Wiita.

Registration for the spelling bee will take place through March 5th. The cost is $5 per student with monies being used to cover the cost of the awards. Volunteers willing to serve as judges and to organize and distribute awards are also being sought. To volunteer or register your child contact Wiita at jwiita@roadrunner.com.

The Valleyview Homeschool Support group meets the second Monday of each month at Valleyview Chapel, 1391 State Road, Wadsworth. The purpose of the group is to support local homeschoolers by providing information, activities and events that enhance the homeschool experience.
