We are so fortunate to live in a state with so many historical sites to visit! On February 24 and 26 from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm come and visit the museum and gardens at Old Salem for their special Homeschool Days.
Per the website: Join us for a gastronomic journey back to the 18th and early 19th centuries. Food not only provided daily sustenance, it was an important part of the social and spiritual lives of the people in Salem. Salem diaries detail the seasonality and types of foods served at meals and special occasions. Find out how food was procured, prepared and preserved in the past. Many hands-on activities and demonstrations throughout the day such as:
- Learn hearthside cooking techniques while cooking corn cakes in the Single Brothers' kitchen
- Baking Gingerbread in a bake kettle in the Single Brothers' Workshop
- Discover the popular flavors of the 18th century and early 19th century in the SBH dining room
- 18th century chocolate, is it different from today?
- Learn early table manners and deportment
- Baking at the Vierling
- Make a marzipan treat at the Vierling Barn
- A healthy diet in the 18th century at Vierling Apothecary
- Learn about the progression of eating utensils in the Vogler House parlor
Reservations can be made from January 4 through February 10, 2010. Please call Sales Reservations at 1-800-441-5305 to make reservations. Discounted Homeschool ticket prices of $8.00 per child and $10.00 per adult are available with advance reservations and prepayment. Registration/Prepayment must be made by February 10, 2010 to receive the discounted rate. No refunds are available. If space is available tickets may be purchased the day of the event at full admission price. Tickets sold on event day only at the Old Salem Visitor Center. Reservations will be on a first come basis. Please phone in early as our spaces for this event fill quickly.
Old Salem is located south of downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Old Salem Visitor Center address is 900 Old Salem Road for those who use computer mapping. Brown highway signs from US Highway 52 and Interstate 40 in Winston-Salem will help you to find Old Salem from the Stadium Drive exit.
